Litigation and Policy Counsel

Location: Flexible. Applicants from U.S. Territories are encouraged to apply. Some travel may be required.

Summary:

The Litigation & Policy Counsel will support Right to Democracy’s work to promote systems-level change – both inside and outside the courts – by challenging the colonial legal framework established by the Insular Cases and the “plenary power” doctrine. The position will work closely with our co-directors, community partners, and our cross-territorial litigation committee to expand our litigation efforts.

The role will include working with Right to Democracy’s Advocacy Director to advance our policy work across all three branches of the federal government, as well as state, territorial, and local government. The position will also help us expand our policy work to focus more on regional and international engagement in the areas of human rights and the environment.

The position will support legal and historical research, including for our Building Understanding series, which partners with local experts to gather in-depth information on the political, legal, and cultural development of each territory as a tool to share knowledge within each territory, across the territories, and throughout the United States as a whole.

Salary Range: $70,000 - $75,000
